Can manual handling be avoided?

Every year, millions of workers are injured through back pain and other musculoskeletal ailments caused by manual handling.

One obvious solution is to abolish manual handling, but while automation and lifting equipment can replace a lot of manual handling, it is doubtful whether all manual handling can be avoided. Nevertheless, steps can be taken to lessen risks.

Injuries can be caused by loads that are too heavy. If possible, split large loads into smaller ones. If the load is difficult to grasp and likely to slip out of the hands, fix handles to the objects. Gloves that grip can make handling smooth objects safer.

If a load is unbalanced, it is difficult to find its centre of gravity, which is why unstable heavy loads can put severe strain on the body. Consider using manual handling equipment for all unstable loads, even if they are only moderately heavy.

Provide training for how to lift loads safety. If objects are difficult to reach, insist that workers use platforms or ladders to prevent the strain of stretching up. If a load is in an awkward position and requires twisting the trunk to reach, it could cause injury. This may require a reorganisation of the storage space.

Lighting needs to be adequate at all times. If an object is difficult to see, this can make handling it more dangerous.

Though robotics and automation are influencing warehouses, some manual handling remains inevitable, but good health and safety work practices can keep its risks to a minimum.
