The Internet of Things helps workplace safety

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to systems of internet connected devices, and IoT equipment can contribute to the health and safety of workers.

Devices containing sensors can monitor many aspects of the workplace, including temperature, humidity, the density of people moving in areas, carbon monoxide monitoring and detecting dangerous levels of harmful gases. When many devices collect and share data, this can then be used to spot potential hazardous areas in the workspace.

The information that the devices collect can inform the decision-making process when dealing with health and safety matters. This can be used in many practical ways, including identifying when workers need to use of safety equipment or areas that require safety signs.

Research by the University of Southern California found that workers feel more confident about safety issues when they know the environment is being monitored by IoT devices. If devices are detecting dangerous gases, for example, then workers know that as soon as unsafe levels of gas are detected they will immediately be warned and can take action. The devices will also inform supervisors and managers who can then make sure that no one enters an area until the gas has been dealt with.

Workplace safety starts with identifying problems. If safety regulations change, internet-connected devices can keep workers informed and up to date. IoT systems can detect risks and inform both management and workers. The Internet of Things can be an important tool to help prevent workplace accidents and injuries.
