Recycling bins not fully utilised, council confirms

Residents in Gloucester are encouraged to separate their rubbish into various recycling bins, so it seems a reasonable assumption that all the rubbish would be kept separate when it was collected. A resident from the suburb of Elmridge, however, spotted that when the rubbish truck arrived outside their home, all the rubbish from the various recycling bins was tipped into the same area in the rubbish truck.

Gloucester Council has confirmed that this was happening, but says it is not a mistake. The council has bought 14 special trucks that enable rubbish sorting at the kerbside, but says a lack of HGV drivers is why these trucks are not being fully utilised. It has appealed for more HGV drivers to apply for jobs driving recycling trucks, and stresses that when the rubbish is received at the depot, it is sorted by hand for recycling.

Many businesses are committed to recycling. Basic recycling is straightforward using recycling bins at various points in workspaces where different types of rubbish are separated. These bins vary from large 60-litre plastic bins, to value for money cardboard ones.

The government claims that 177 million tonnes of waste is generated in England each year. This costs the economy a considerable amount and damages the environment. The government encourages local councils to sign up to its business waste and recycling services commitment, thus enabling local authorities to work with businesses to reduce waste by recycling where possible.

Unlike Gloucester, most councils keep rubbish from various recycle bins separate when collected.
